Patient Care

The SFVA Division of Hematology/Oncology provides outstanding, high-quality care to the veterans of Northern California.  Our team provides inpatient Hematology/Oncology consultation service, outpatient clinical care, and electronic consultations.

Our inpatient services include providing diagnostic assistance and consultation for hematologic or oncologic issues.  We offer diagnostic procedures, including bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures for CSF analysis.  We provide for inpatient treatment of malignant and non-malignant hematology and solid tumor oncology cases.   The SFVA is the main cancer center for veterans living in the SF Bay Area and regions that include Eureka, Ukiah, Clearlake, and Santa Rosa. We are also the main referral center for induction therapy for acute leukemia and for all inpatient chemotherapy for the VA centers in our surrounding area (including Fresno, Sacramento, and Martinez).  We work closely with the VA Puget Sound Seattle Marrow Transplant Unit (MTU), and refer patients when clinically indicated to their team for stem cell transplants.

Our outpatient continuity clinics provide care for patients diagnosed with both solid tumor and malignant and non-malignant hematologic diagnoses.  We have an infusion center that provides for outpatient chemotherapy. Judith Sheridan is the charge RN for the infusion center.  Our RNs also administer transfusions, intravenous iron, growth factor injections, and androgen deprivation therapies.  We also routinely provide for VTEL (video-linked conference) appointments for our veterans that live at a great distance from our center and oversee patients referred to community Hematology/Oncology practices under our Community Care Program.  Our CNS in Oncology, Deborah Burgoon supervises and oversees this program. We also have a cancer survivorship clinic run by our NP Alicia Rigby.  In our multidisciplinary outpatient clinic, we provide access to palliative care, nutrition, social work, and mental health providers.

Dr. Minichiello is the Chief of our Anticoagulation and Thrombosis Service. She oversees the inpatient anticoagulation service and all quality improvement efforts related to safe anticoagulant use in our long-term care facility, on the inpatient services, in the SF VA outpatient clinics and the VA's rural satellite clinics. She also provides electronic consultation to provide rapid advice to referring VA-based clinicians in SF, Northern California up to the Oregon border and Reno Nevada. She runs a thrombosis clinic in Hematology where patients with complicated clotting disorders are evaluated.  Dr. Minichiello plays a key role in the VISN 21 anticoagulation working group as the only active MD representative to this pharmacy based working group charged with creating policies and procedures related to inpatient and outpatient anticoagulation.
